Tokahe Institute

The organization

Tokahe Institute empowers Native and rural students across South Dakota with the support, tools, and community to step into their futures on their own terms. Its name and philosophy come from the Lakota Emergence Story: Tokahe, “the first one,” waited until the time was right to emerge into the world.

A digital home the Institute’s own team can grow, on a domain that stays theirs.

What we built

A full site that tells the Institute’s story and carries its work: its roots in the Emergence Story, the Tokahe Scholars Model, programs and events, leadership, and resources for students, families, and educators.

The design is grounded in place, the prairie and the Badlands, and in the Institute’s own artwork, so the site reads as the organization rather than a template.

Built for the team to run

Text and images are both editable in a simple editor, so the Institute’s team can keep the site current, post events, and swap photos without a developer. The content and the domain stay theirs.

Where it stands

Launching in August 2026 on the Institute’s own domain. Built to grow as the program does.
